ISO 45001:2018 Occupational Health
and Safety Management System (OH&SMS)
What is ISO 45001:2018?
ISO 45001:2018 is the internationally recognised standard related to Occupational Health and Safety that exists to help companies and organisations to address occupational health and safety (OH&S) rather than product safety.
The adoption of an OH&S management system is intended to enable an organisation to provide safe and healthy workplaces, prevent work-related injury and ill health, and continually improve its OH&S performance.
The purpose of an OH&S management system is to provide a framework for managing OH&S risks and opportunities. The aim and intended outcomes of the OH&S management system are to prevent work-related injury and ill health to workers and to provide safe and healthy workplaces; consequently, it is critically important for the organisation to eliminate hazards and minimize OH&S risks by taking effective preventive and protective measures.
When these measures are applied by the organisation through its OH&S management system, they improve its OH&S performance. An OH&S management system can be more effective and efficient when taking early action to address opportunities for improvement of OH&S performance.
Implementing an OH&S management system conforming to this document enables an organisation to manage its OH&S risks and improve its OH&S performance. An OH&S management system can assist an organisation to fulfil its legal requirements and other requirements.
Many organisations will have elements required by ISO 45001:2018 already in place which can be supplemented to provide a more cohesive management system to meet the requirements of the standard.

The GWA approach to ISO 45001:2018
In brief our basic philosophy is to make the implementation of your Health and Safety Management System (OHSMS) as painless and simple as possible, causing the minimum disruption to personnel and the business while aiding business efficiency.
We look after the development of the detailed Operational Procedures for the Occupational Heath and Safety Management System, detailing company methods of operation utilising as many existing systems as possible and alternative levels of documentation such as Process Maps, Flowcharts, Risk Assessments, Method Statements and Work Instructions can be utilised including Standard Publications (such as Codes of Practice).
We assist in the development of objectives and long term goals for better Health & Safety, Environmental and Operational performance.
We provide employees with ISO 45001:2018 System awareness training, its meaning to their area of operation and establish the concept of ‘ownership’ necessary for successful implementation.
As part of the installation of your ISO 45001:2018 we undertake the initial internal audits that are necessary to check the effectiveness of the system. These will be both process and compliance based. Where corrective action is required we will advise and reach agreement with you on changes we believe to be most practical.
We provide maintenance of your system with ongoing support or can provide auditing and maintenance against your existing system.
